Shingles

Pain or burning on one side of the body, followed by a band of small blisters, is often shingles. Consulting early matters.

This information is general and does not constitute medical advice. Only a doctor can assess your situation.

What is shingles?

Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus, which remains dormant in the nerves after the illness and can reactivate years later. It mainly affects people aged 50 and older and those with weakened immune systems.

The rash follows the path of a nerve, most often on one side of the chest or face. A consultation in the first few days of the rash allows the doctor to assess treatment options.

Common symptoms and signs

  • Localized pain, burning or tingling before the rash
  • Red patches followed by small fluid-filled blisters
  • A band-shaped rash on one side of the body
  • Fatigue, sometimes with fever or headaches
  • Itching

Causes and risk factors

  • Age 50 or older
  • An immune system weakened by illness or treatment
  • Significant stress or fatigue
  • Having had chickenpox

What a video consultation can offer

The doctor determines whether your situation is suitable for a virtual consultation.

During the consultation, the doctor can:

  • Assess the rash shown on camera
  • Discuss treatment options and pain relief
  • Advise you on how to avoid transmitting the virus

It does not replace:

  • An eye examination when the rash affects the face
  • An in-person assessment if complications occur

Do not wait for a video consultation if you have:

  • A rash near the eye or on the nose
  • A weakened immune system
  • A rash spreading to several areas of the body
  • High fever, confusion or severe headaches
