What is a yeast infection?
Vaginal candidiasis is caused by an overgrowth of a fungus, most often Candida albicans, that is naturally present in the vaginal flora. When this flora becomes unbalanced, the fungus multiplies.
Most women have at least one during their lifetime. Similar symptoms can have other causes, however, such as bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection, which is why a medical assessment is useful.

- Itching and irritation of the vulva and vagina
- Thick white discharge without a strong odour
- Redness or swelling of the vulva
- Burning when urinating
- Pain during sex
Causes and risk factors
- Recent antibiotic use
- Hormonal changes: pregnancy, contraception, menstrual cycle
- Poorly controlled diabetes
- Wearing damp clothing or swimsuits for a long time
- Douching and irritating intimate care products
