Lyme disease

Transmitted by the bite of an infected tick, Lyme disease is becoming more common in Quebec. Redness that spreads after a bite warrants a consultation.

This information is general and does not constitute medical advice. Only a doctor can assess your situation.

What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted through the bite of a blacklegged tick. In Quebec, the risk is higher in the south of the province, particularly in Estrie, Montérégie and Outaouais.

The risk of transmission increases the longer the tick remains attached: removing it promptly reduces the risk.

Common symptoms and signs

  • Redness spreading around the bite, often larger than 5 cm
  • Fever and chills
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Muscle or joint pain

Causes and risk factors

  • Activities in forests, wooded areas or tall grass
  • Spending time in a region where the disease is present
  • A tick attached for more than 24 hours
  • Exposed skin without long clothing or insect repellent

What a video consultation can offer

The doctor determines whether your situation is suitable for a virtual consultation.

During the consultation, the doctor can:

  • Assess a recent bite or redness shown on camera
  • Discuss what to do after a bite
  • Refer you for tests if needed

It does not replace:

  • Tick removal or a close examination of the skin
  • An in-person assessment for neurological or cardiac symptoms

Do not wait for a video consultation if you have:

  • Paralysis on one side of the face
  • Palpitations, dizziness or chest pain
  • Severe headaches with a stiff neck
  • Very swollen or painful joints
