Urinary tract infection
Burning when urinating, urgent needs to urinate, cloudy urine: urinary tract infections are one of the most common reasons to consult a doctor.
This information is general and does not constitute medical advice. Only a doctor can assess your situation.
What is a urinary tract infection?
A urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria, most often from the bowel, enter the urinary tract and multiply. When it affects the bladder, it is called cystitis; when it reaches the kidneys, it is called pyelonephritis, a more serious infection.
Women are affected much more often than men because their urethra is shorter. In men, urinary tract infections are less common and often require a more thorough assessment.

What a video consultation can offer
The doctor determines whether your situation is suitable for a virtual consultation.
During the consultation, the doctor can:
- Assess your symptoms and medical history
- Discuss treatment options suited to your situation
- Let you know whether a urine test or culture is needed
It does not replace:
- A physical examination or urine test
- An in-person assessment when the doctor considers it necessary, particularly for men or during pregnancy
Do not wait for a video consultation if you have:
- Fever, chills or back or flank pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Urinary symptoms during pregnancy
- No improvement after a few days
