Obesity

Obesity is a chronic disease, not a matter of willpower. A doctor can help you review your health and the options for managing it.

This information is general and does not constitute medical advice. Only a doctor can assess your situation.

What is obesity?

The World Health Organization defines obesity as excessive body fat that harms health. In adults, body mass index (BMI) is often used: a BMI of 30 or higher corresponds to obesity.

BMI remains an imperfect measure. Waist circumference, fat distribution and overall health also matter, and the doctor considers the whole picture.

Common symptoms and signs

  • Fat accumulation, particularly around the abdomen
  • Shortness of breath with exertion
  • Fatigue
  • Snoring or sleep apnea
  • Joint pain
  • Effects on self-esteem

Causes and risk factors

  • A diet high in calories and processed foods
  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • Genetic and family factors
  • Hormonal changes: pregnancy, menopause
  • Certain medications
  • Stress and lack of sleep

What a video consultation can offer

The doctor determines whether your situation is suitable for a virtual consultation.

During the consultation, the doctor can:

  • Review your medical history and lifestyle habits
  • Discuss medical and non-medical management options
  • Let you know which blood tests or follow-up care may be useful

It does not replace:

  • Measurements of your weight or blood pressure, or laboratory tests
  • Regular follow-up for a chronic health condition

Do not wait for a video consultation if you have:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Severe shortness of breath at rest
  • Sudden, painful swelling of a leg
